Achieving Your Goals
Firstly, I know many of you have goals you want to achieve, so
let's take a further look at this process.
This article is going to provide you with some valuable techniques
for achieving your goals. This may seem a bit strange to start with,
but stick with it as it really does work.
Let's take an immediate goal that you want to achieve. Perhaps
you want to get out of bed at 6am every morning feeling great so
you can get to work on time. Yep, it's time to end your relationship
with the snooze button.
How would you achieve this goal? Many people would set the alarm
for 6am and force themselves to get out of bed through sheer willpower.
They may get out of bed, but will they be feeling great? Others
may sabotage their snooze button. I know people who go to all the
trouble of resetting their alarm clocks, just to get a few minutes
more in the comfort of their bed.
So, what's the best way to achieve this goal?
Through the power of visualisation.
This may sound like hogwash to you, but visualisation is an incredibly
powerful tool - I imagine that you already use it in your life to
some degree, probably without even realising it. Do you rehearse
a conversation in your mind before you have it? Imagine what you
are going to do for the day? Run through in your mind how you are
going to give that presentation at work? Or ask your boss for a
raise?
You do? Then you are using the power of visualisation.
To continue, you need to have a few immediate goals in your mind.
We are choosing immediate goals because you will then see immediate
results. Once you have seen that this method works astonishingly
well, then move on to some of your longer term goals. If you want
help setting goals, then I have articles and guides on goal setting
free at my website, http://www.shapingyourdestiny.com
We'll assume that you have three goals in your mind that you really
want to achieve right now. Firstly, write them down on an index
card, or on some paper. However, make sure you write them down legibly,
neatly, and correctly.
Your goals must be written in a positive tone, without any negative
statements. If you are assigning targets then be precise. Don't
just say, "I'll give up smoking". Instead, say, "I will give up
smoking by …" and set a date. This way you know when you have
to achieve it by. And don't let the date slip either whilst you're
working towards the goal.
Write out the goals as discussed above. To get you started, here
are a few examples. Write out your own according to what you want
to achieve.
"By December 31st 2002, I will have cleared all of my debt, and
be permanently in the black"
"Each day I am becoming a better person, releasing my negative
thoughts and traits, creating amazingly positive replacements for
them."
"My creativity is flowing better and better each day, allowing
me to write with ease."
"I can achieve anything I want to, the whole world of opportunity
is open to me."
"Every day I am becoming less selfish. I feel more generous towards
others, and wish to share my good fortune with them."
"I am becoming less irritable. Things do not annoy me as much
as they used to."
There are a few ideas for you, so take a few minutes out right
now, and write down your immediate goals on that card. Write down
no more than five goals.
You must carry your goals around with you wherever you go, in
your purse, wallet, or whatever. This allows you to look at them
regularly throughout the day and remind yourself of what you want
to achieve. What you are about to learn here will surprise you with
its potency and simplicity.
It is important that this particular set of goals is not seen
by anyone else. If someone sees them by accident, it's not too big
a problem, but try to keep them to yourself. Obviously, don't let
yourself get into any marital problems because you are hiding a
bit of card from your partner! The reason for this is you do not
want their expectations or negativity to influence the outcome.
This exercise will take you no more than ten minutes twice daily.
Do it in both the morning and in the evening.
Find a quiet place where you won't be disturbed for about 5 to
10 minutes and take out the card with your immediate goals written
on. This could be in your car in the office car park or even in
the toilet! Look at them, and calm your mind. Focus your mind on
the goals, and know that you will be successful. Now start the exercise.
In a firm, decisive voice that is full of confidence and the knowledge
of your success, read aloud your first goal. (If you can't read
it out aloud, then read it in your mind, but with the same tone
of voice).
Close your eyes and visualise the success of your goal. Imagine
how it would feel to have achieved it. If your goal was to loose
weight, see yourself with the weight lost. If your goal was to clear
debt, see yourself writing out cheques to clear the debt, and receiving
statements saying the debt is cleared. Do this for about a minute.
Focus on the outcome.
Open your eyes and repeat the first two steps for each one of
your immediate goals.
When you have done this for each of your goals, say in the same
certain tone of voice, "And so it will be."
This is a very powerful exercise, and works very well if you are
dedicated to doing this every day. Don't be tempted to skip days
as the potency of this will be diluted; the success you desire may
take longer to achieve. When you achieve a goal on your list, replace
it with another.
To start with, you might want to put some goals that are within
your reach, for example, getting up in time for work, and build
up to achieving bigger goals. Using this technique is very much
like using a muscle in your body - it needs exercise before it can
handle the bigger weights.
This works because you are putting out the intent and expectation
of your success, and so it will happen.
Now you may well be looking at some of your goals and thinking
to yourself, "I'm never going to achieve that." Or "How am I going
to achieve that?"
At this stage it's quite natural to do that. Though you need to
not worry too much about the how part of achieving your goals. Just
know that you will. The how will become clear later on. You need
to understand that there is always a way to achieve your goals if
you are committed to them. The way will be revealed to you via your
intuition or synchronicity (gut feeling and luck as many people
call it).
You will know the way - trust me on that! I know you are more
than likely sitting there thinking, "How?" If you are committed
to achieving your goals, you will find a way. You may not know how
you will achieve them at this moment, but an idea might hit you
tomorrow, or the next day, or the day after . . . Whenever, but
it will come. Trust in yourself. Keep a journal of your ideas -
they're always useful.
With all goals, you should remain flexible to the outcome. You
may have a goal of getting a lot of money. You may think that the
best way for you to achieve that is to become a pop star. However,
what happens if you are trying that method and it does not appear
to be working? You need to be flexible and change your approach.
Perhaps there is a different opportunity presenting itself to you
that will be better. Stay committed to your goal, and be creative
about achieving it, though always stay on the right side of the
law!
In summary, focus on your goals daily, repeat the visualisation
exercise, believe in your success, and remain flexible and open
to ideas from the universe. Doing this, you cannot fail to achieve
your goals.

Wealth Building
Each month, we bring you a tip or trick for building your wealth.
This month, the first of the 9 keys of wealth, by Jason Johns.
The first key is to make your money work for you, instead of you
working for money. A poor person will work in a single job and when
they need more money, they get a second job, and spend more time
working. All this time spent working hard earns you a wage, of which,
the establishment takes large portion from you in the form of taxes
and other deductions. A rich person would have people and money
working for them. They would make their money work for them by using
it to purchase assets. For a rich person, money is not the prime
objective, time is. You can work three jobs that take up your whole
week and give you no time, and still not be as rich as you desire
or deserve. Many people fall into this trap and try to work extra
jobs to get extra money. You need to learn to work smart, rather
than just working hard. The key is to have your money working for
you, and ideally, for you to be earning money whilst you sleep.
In today's electronic marketplace, it is possible to do this by
marketing your skills, products, and services to the global marketplace
via the Internet. Your money can also work for you in many other
ways, in stocks and property to name but two. Be inventive and creative
with your money, but remember, never invest more than you can afford
to loose. Remember; make your money work for you, as detailed in
the second key.
To learn more about reducing debt and building wealth, I strongly
recommend reading "The Richest Man in Babylon" by George S. Clayson.
It's a small, cheap paperback that you'll finish in just a few hours;
and then want to read again, and again. It contains invaluable advice
in the form of parables set in ancient Babylon. Purchase your copy

Study Tip
Rosemary oil aids concentration and clears the mind. When you
are studying burn this oil in the room to help you make the most
from the session. If you can't burn the oil, then either put a few
drops on a tissue and regularly smell it, or hold the bottle under
your nose for a few seconds at a time to get the same effect.
The Four Emotions That Can Lead to Life Change
(Excerpted from Seven Strategies for Wealth and Happiness)
Emotions are the most powerful forces inside us. Under the power
of emotions, human beings can perform the most heroic (as well as
barbaric) acts. To a great degree, civilization itself can be defined
as the intelligent channelling of human emotion. Emotions are fuel
and the mind is the pilot, which together propel the ship of civilized
progress.
Which emotions cause people to act? There are four basic ones;
each, or a combination of several, can trigger the most incredible
activity. The day that you allow these emotions to fuel your desire
is the day you'll turn your life around.
1) DISGUST
One does not usually equate the word "disgust" with positive action.
And yet properly channelled, disgust can change a person's life.
The person who feels disgusted has reached a point of no return.
He or she is ready to throw down the gauntlet at life and say, "I've
had it!" That's what I said after many humiliating experiences at
age 25, I said. "I don't want to live like this anymore. I've had
it with being broke. I've had it with being embarrassed, and I've
had it with lying."
Yes, productive feelings of disgust come when a person says, "Enough
is enough."
The "guy" has finally had it with mediocrity. He's had it with
those awful sick feelings of fear, pain and humiliation. He then
decides he is not going to live like this anymore." Look out! This
could be the day that turns a life around. Call it what you will,
the "I've had it" day, the "never again" day, the "enough's enough"
day. Whatever you call it, it's powerful! There is nothing so life-changing
as gut-wrenching disgust!
2) DECISION
Most of us need to be pushed to the wall to make decisions. And
once we reach this point, we have to deal with the conflicting emotions
that come with making them. We have reached a fork in the road.
Now this fork can be a two-prong, three-prong, or even a four-prong
fork. No wonder that decision- making can create knots in stomachs,
keep us awake in the middle of the night, or make us break out in
a cold sweat.
Making life-changing decisions can be likened to internal civil
war. Conflicting armies of emotions, each with its own arsenal of
reasons, battle each other for supremacy of our minds. And our resulting
decisions, whether bold or timid, well thought out or impulsive,
can either set the course of action or blind it. I don't have much
advice to give you about decision-making except this:
Whatever you do, don't camp at the fork in the road. Decide. It's
far better to make a wrong decision than to not make one at all.
Each of us must confront our emotional turmoil and sort out our
feelings.
3) DESIRE
How does one gain desire? I don't think I can answer this directly
because there are many ways. But I do know two things about desire:
a. It comes from the inside not the outside.
b. It can be triggered by outside forces.
Almost anything can trigger desire. It's a matter of timing as much
as preparation. It might be a song that tugs at the heart. It might
be a memorable sermon. It might be a movie, a conversation with
a friend, a confrontation with the enemy, or a bitter experience.
Even a book or an article such as this one can trigger the inner
mechanism that will make some people say, "I want it now!"
Therefore, while searching for your "hot button" of pure, raw
desire, welcome into your life each positive experience. Don't erect
a wall to protect you from experiencing life. The same wall that
keeps out your disappointment also keeps out the sunlight of enriching
experiences. So let life touch you. The next touch could be the
one that turns your life around.
4) RESOLVE
Resolve says, "I will." These two words are among the most potent
in the English language. I WILL. Benjamin Disraeli, the great British
statesman, once said, "Nothing can resist a human will that will
stake even its existence on the extent of its purpose." In other
words, when someone resolves to "do or die," nothing can stop him.
The mountain climber says, "I will climb the mountain. They've
told me it's too high, it's too far, it's too steep, it's too rocky,
it's too difficult. But it's my mountain. I will climb it. You'll
soon see me waving from the top or you'll never see me, because
unless I reach the peak, I'm not coming back." Who can argue with
such resolve?
When confronted with such iron-will determination, I can see Time,
Fate and Circumstance calling a hasty conference and deciding, "We
might as well let him have his dream. He's said he's going to get
there or die trying."
The best definition for "resolve" I've ever heard came from a
schoolgirl in Foster City, California. As is my custom, I was lecturing
about success to a group of bright kids at a junior high school.
I asked, "Who can tell me what "resolve" means?" Several hands went
up, and I did get some pretty good definitions. But the last was
the best. A shy girl from the back of the room got up and said with
quiet intensity, "I think resolve means promising yourself you will
never give up." That's it! That's the best definition I've ever
heard: PROMISE YOURSELF YOU'LL NEVER GIVE UP.
Think about it! How long should a baby try to learn how to walk?
How long would you give the average baby before you say, "That's
it, you've had your chance"? You say that's crazy? Of course it
is. Any mother would say, "My baby is going to keep trying until
he learns how to walk!" No wonder everyone walks.
There is a vital lesson in this. Ask yourself, "How long am I
going to work to make my dreams come true?" I suggest you answer,
"As long as it takes." That's what these four emotions are all about.

The Rocking Chair Test
Are you ever caught with indecision about what to do in a situation?
Well, allow me to share with you a technique called "The Rocking
Chair Test". It's very simple, takes only a couple of minutes and
really helps to put decisions in focus.
So, you have a decision to make. Find somewhere quiet, and close
your eyes for a moment. Imagine that you are 96 years old, sitting
on your veranda in your rocking chair, slowly rocking back and forth.
Imagine that you are looking back at your life. Look back at the
decision that you are about to take in the present time. See how
it affected your life (imagine how it affects your life). Do you,
from your rocking chair perspective, regret making that decision?
Or are you celebrating it, happy that you took it?
When you have the perspective you need, return back to the present
moment and make your decision. Remember never to leave the scene
of a decision without taking some action.
This is a very simple technique, but very powerful and very useful
to help you decide what to do.
Book Of The Month
The book of the month is "NLP: The New Technology of Achievement"
by Steve Andreas, Charles Faulkner, & the NLP Comprehensive Training
Team.
For those who have never heard of it, NLP stands for Neuro-linguistic
programming. This was developed in the 1970's, and is basically,
programming your mind. It is not complex, but is highly effective,
and often surprisingly simple. It has been used by millions of people,
and trainers such as Tony Robbins, use NLP technology in their work.
This book provides an excellent step-by-step guide to some of
the NLP technologies, telling you exactly how to use them in your
life. Through applying these technologies to your life, you can
learn the characteristics of top achievers and create a blueprint
for your success.
Your only limitations are those that you choose to put on yourself,
and through the use of NLP, you can remove these limitations and
fly as high as you want.
Some things you will learn from this book include
- How to get motivated
- Discover your mission in life
- Creating rapport and strong relationships
- Eliminating fears and phobias
- Building self confidence
- Securing a positive mental attitude
And of course, much, much more :) This book also includes a 21-day
personal success program at the end, utilising what you've learnt
to get on your path to success.

The Swish Pattern
The Swish pattern is an NLP Technique used to make lasting behavioural
changes. It does this by taking an image of some behaviour you do
not want and replacing it with the image of a new pattern that is
better for you. It does it in such a way that the old pattern because
a stimulus to you doing the new pattern! This is a very effective,
and very easy technique to use.
- Firstly, identify the pattern or behaviour that you wish to
change.
- Identify a picture that you will use to swish. It may be a picture
of what you see just before you start the behaviour. For example,
if you bite your nails, you may see your hand come up to your
mouth; if you smoke, you may see a cigarette coming up to your
mouth. Fully associate (that is, really be there and feel it)
with this image, including feel any pain you associate with the
behaviour.
- Create a picture of how you would see yourself differently if
you had already accomplished the desired change. In the above
examples, this may be a hand with tidy nails, a cigarette free
hand. Feel any pleasures you associate with the new behaviour.
- Close your eyes and see the beginning image (from Step 2) in
your minds eye. See it as big and bright and in front of you.
- Form a small picture of the new behaviour (from Step 3) in the
lower right hand corner of the first picture.
- In less than a second, say the word "wooosh" with all your enthusiasm
as you simultaneously make the small picture grow in size and
brightness until it bursts through the big picture, obliterating
it.
- Pause for a moment to fully experience this new state of being,
and then open your eyes for a moment.
- Repeat steps 4 to 7 at least 7 times to ensure the new behaviour
is fully integrated.
- Test how effective this is by visualising the first stimulus
and seeing if the new image replaces it.
The key to success here is speed, repetition, and being fully associated
with the images that you see. Repeat the exercise as often as you
have to until whenever you think of the first image, the second comes
in to your mind.
Another technique is to use a slingshot effect, which is the same
apart from you visualise the new image in a catapult which is then
shot into the old picture, destroying it and replacing it.
