The Secret of Motivation

When we want to instigate change there are just two motivational factors you need to be aware of:
  • Pain
  • Pleasure
We move towards pleasure, and away from pain. The reasons behind us doing anything are to avoid pain or to get pleasure. Analyse some of your actions and see if you can see the truth in this. It is very important that this concept is thoroughly understood because it gives you a powerful tool to implement change in your life.

If there is something you want to stop doing then you need to link massive pain to keep doing it and massive pleasure to not doing it. Imagine that you are eating too much fatty foods, for example. To associate pain with this you might imagine yourself a few years in the future and see how you look, bigger and unhealthier. Project yourself further into the future and see the ultimate result from eating fatty foods - high cholesterol and heart problems. Then associate pleasure with giving up fatty foods, imagine a long and productive life, living long enough to see your children grow up and have grand-children for you. This process associate's pain with what you want to stop and pleasure with stopping, which gives you a lot of leverage against your sub-conscious and makes the change happen.

The same process applies for something you wanted to start doing, exercise for example. This time you associate pleasure with exercise (more energy, a slimmer figure, feeling good about yourself) and pain with not exercising (less energy, a plumper figure and not feeling so good about yourself).

It is very important that when you are visualising yourself here you must be fully associated with the picture, i.e. be in it experiencing it, not just watching it on a big screen. This works because the sub-conscious does not know the difference between what you imagine and what you actually experience. Being fully associated anchors the pain or pleasure into your sub-conscious who will very quickly agree to change.

"Ideas are like rabbits. You get a couple and learn how to handle them, and pretty soon you have a dozen"

Wealth Tip

When you are looking to build your wealth and your business there is a vital key to success that so many people overlook.

"Serve others and so you will become wealthy"

By looking at your business or services and asking "How can I better serve other people" you will find your business grows beyond your wildest dreams.

Anthony Robbins sat down many years ago and asked himself this very question. Within a year his net worth had skyrocketed from $40,000 a year to over $1 million! He continually asks himself this question and now has more money than he knows what to do with.

Providing a valuable service to other people will guarantee your success.

"We forfeit three-fourths of ourselves in order to be like other people."
Arthur Schopenhauer (1788 - 1860)

Internal Dialogue

All of us chatter away to ourselves in our mind during the day. This is an almost constant stream of dialogue emanating from our conscious minds chit-chatting about anything and everything - most of it inane. Through the use of meditation techniques and practising mindfulness (being in the present moment) we can quieten this mental chatter.

For many people, this internal dialogue can be negative. It may say things like "You should have said …" or "Why didn't you …" or "You're not as good as …" and on and on ad infinitum. This is like have a CD playing constantly in your head programming you with negativity! It helps to decrease the quality of your life and hold you back from being an achiever.

Using what you have learnt in the previous section, you can begin to reprogram your internal voice so that it becomes more encouraging and supportive. Imagine it becoming some cheerleaders and a marching band cheering you on and celebrating your life rather than a grumpy old man grumbling about life.

When your internal voice starts speaking negatively you must counter it with a strong positive suggestion. If you are trying to learn a new language your internal voice may say "Ha - you'll never manage this - you're awful at learning." You then focus yourself on a positive affirmation and ignore the negative words. You may say something like, "I learn easily and quickly". Repeat it 3 times forcefully and in a positive voice and this will start to counter-act the negative programming.

If you repeatedly notice your internal voice focuses on certain topics or traits then you can use affirmations or other techniques (such as the pendulum technique discussed earlier) to focus on these areas to change the programming.

The inner voice is normally in a voice you respect and listen to. Perhaps it is the same as one of your parents or a teacher from school. Whether you admit it or not - it has an effect on you. It sabotages you from within, sapping your energy and making you feel bad about yourself.

What do you think would happen to the meaning of the words if instead of it being spoken in this forceful voice you respect, a comedy cartoon character spoke it?

Do you think you would take the voice seriously and listen to it? Do you think it would have any affect on you at all? I imagine you would probably laugh loudly at it and ignore it.

When you hear your inner voice speaking negatively to you, turn the voice into the funniest comedy voice you can think of. You can also repeat the words it just said in the comedy voice and you will soon find that their effect on you diminishes significantly.

Though this technique sounds simple and perhaps laughable it is incredibly effective. Try it next time your internal dialogue is being negative and putting you down and see what happens.

"The farther behind I leave the past, the closer I am to forging my own character."
Isabelle Eberhardt

Health Tip - the 80 / 20 rule

When anyone starts eating healthy one of the first things they do is deny themselves food they enjoy but deem "unhealthy". This denial in itself creates desire and cravings. Then if you submit to your desire and have what you want, you then feel guilty about not sticking to your new eating program.

Instead of denying yourself what you desire and creating these negative feelings, what if you could eat some of what you wanted?

This is where the 80 / 20 rule comes in. Ensure that 80% of what you eat is healthy and good for you. The other 20% of what you eat can be anything you want whether it is healthy or not.

This simple technique ensures that you still eat some "bad" food, whilst remaining healthy.
