New Year, New You
As the New Year draws ever closer, so many of our thoughts turn towards
those dreaded resolutions and what we want to achieve next year. For
many people, these resolutions will last all of a few weeks before
being forgotten about and the old rut being settled back into.
As an achiever, you want to get the most out of next year and
make some wonderful changes in your life, but to do so you have
to effectively create your New Year's Resolutions. The Christmas
and New Year period is an excellent opportunity to create your yearly
goals as many of us are off work.
A New Year's Resolution is just a goal with a fancy name. It is
generally a goal that you will achieve within the timeframe of a
year or less.
As with goals, your resolutions must be
- Specific: detail exactly what you want to achieve
- Targeted: a precise time frame for achievement
- Quantifiable: know exactly how much you want to achieve
- Positive: in positive language
Without these, your resolution will be woolly, ill-defined and probably
not last much beyond the middle of January.
Most resolutions are only made mentally and vaguely. So write
your resolutions down in precise detail as you learnt in the goalsetting
ebook (available at http://www.shapingyourdestiny.com/ebooks.htm).
Make sure that you also write out an action plan to achieving each
of your resolutions - how exactly are you going to do it?
Typically, resolutions are forgotten soon after New Year's Day,
so put copies of your resolutions where you will see them and keep
track of your progress to achieve them.
Make sure the resolutions are things that you really want to do.
There is no point making a resolution for something if you don't
really want to do it - there is even less chance of your success
then.
Beware of trying to do too much in a year. You may have a lot
of resolutions, but if you try to do too much you are dooming yourself
to failure. Take the most important resolutions and do those. The
others you can do later - there is plenty of time available for
you.
If you don't have a set of goals for your life, why not take advantage
of the Christmas holiday and create a blueprint for the life of
your dreams? Free articles and e-books are available at the Shaping
Your Destiny site to help you with goal-setting, and I am more than
happy to help any of you set and achieve your goals.
Most importantly, when making your resolutions for the New Year,
have fun.

Simply Christmas
It's that time of year again - the Silly Season. Regardless of any
particular religious affiliations, we all love Christmas and the giving,
getting, partying, visiting, decorating etc. Then a week later, we've
got to clean it all up, put it all away, pay all the outstanding bills
we left unpaid to fit in more 'stuff' for Christmas and we promise
ourselves we're not going to do that again......but we do...... every
year.
In this modern world, we just have too much 'stuff' and we get
more every year. I don't mean the essentials like clothing, food,
furniture and the all important roof over our head. I mean 'stuff'
we just don't need and don't use. Many people feel deprived in some
way if they don't have lots of belongings around them, so they hoard
everything they can get their hands on only to find that they don't
feel any better or less deprived than they did before. I believe
we are all guilty of this at some point and sooner or later we must
call a halt!!
It's time to simplify Christmas - not Scrooge-ify Christmas, just
simplify it. Be realistic about this. Do you really need to buy
every kid in the neighbourhood a gift? Do you really expect a gift
from every kid in the neighbourhood? Of course you don't. If we
are honest, we really cannot afford to buy all those gifts and the
parents of these kids probably can't afford to buy them either.
So why on earth are we still doing it?
Here's an idea I found very helpful when my boys were a lot younger.
Get together with the parents of all those kids and suggest that
everyone buys (or makes if they are good at crafts) just one gift
per family and each gift is marked "Merry Christmas from the neighbours".....
or whatever greeting you decide. Draw names from a hat and each
person gets to chose which gift they want. Nobody knows what is
in them of course, or who actually purchased it, but everybody is
together having a ball and the parents are a lot happier knowing
they haven't had to spend too much cash they cannot afford. Perhaps
you could have a neighbourhood party, take it in turns which house
it is held at each year and get one of the dads to dress up as Santa
and give out the gifts. We had a ball doing that one year.
This system works great in large families too. Some people feel
they have to buy for every niece, nephew, cousin, cousin's children
etc. This can end up a lot of gifts and awful lot of money. Put
the system to work in the large family and I'm sure you will find
that everyone will be pleased.
It's not easy to make these changes, but just talk to the adults
about it and take it from there.
Remember Christmas is a time for families and friends to get together,
be grateful for and enjoy each others company.
Have a great and simplified Christmas this year.

Think Out Of Your Box
To achieve wealth, you have to learn to think outside of your normal
limits of thinking. That is, to think outside of your normal box.
We all have these boxes of thought. For some people the stock market
is outside their box, for others property is, for others running their
own company is. These limited boxes of thinking are impressed upon
us by our environment, our education, our parents, our friends, our
television viewing habits, and so on.
Many of us are educated and taught that the only way in life is
to go to school, go to college, and get a degree. Then we get a
good job and earn some promotions. Then we hit 60 or 65 years old,
retire with a gold watch and hearty handshake and wait around to
die. This is great for many people, and is all they want from life.
However, if you are reading this, then I suspect that you are yearning
for more, and willing to achieve it. Look at many of the self-made
millionaires. How many of them dropped out of normal education and
have thought way outside their boxes? I am not saying to anyone
to quit his or her job right this instant. I am merely saying that
as we are educated, so our education narrows our field of thinking.
Get out of your box and think laterally and originally to make your
fortune.
Look around you every day, and there will be opportunities to
make money and to pursue wealth. How many things do you use each
day, such as household implements, your car, and so on? Can you
think of ways to make everyday tasks easier, more pleasant and more
efficient? Could you patent and / or market this idea? Many products
on the market have originated in this way, and made their inventors
a fortune.
How many services do you use that could be improved, done better,
or are missing from your neighbourhood? Some examples may be a pizza
takeaway, an ironing service, a sandwich bar, etc. Could you run
any of these services yourself? Do you have any skills, experiences,
or methods that other people might want to know about? Could you
write a book, magazine article, or run a seminar or course on them?
Now to inspire you a little, here are a few examples. A scientist
working for the 3M Corporation was attempting to create better superglue.
Instead, he made one that stuck a little and was easy to remove.
That's hardly an amazing superglue! Instead of being angry at a
"failure", this is now on the market, and I am sure you have all
heard of, and used, Post-It™ Notes.
We have many other examples of people who started with near nothing
and now have vast wealth and business empires. Bill Gates and Steve
Jobs are excellent examples. All these people started their businesses
in a minimalistic way, and are now worth a fortune. Bill Gates started
when he was a student by selling software to his school before purchasing
DOS and selling it to IBM, making Microsoft into a massive company.
Steve Jobs began his business in his garage, and Apple is a huge,
well known company too. These people serve as examples to us all.
The business you start in your garage or spare room could one day
turn into a company like Microsoft, Apple, or Kentucky Fried Chicken.
The possibilities are endless and only limited by your imagination
and your self-belief.

Wealth Tip
The fifth key is to manage your cash flow. It is great to spend money,
but make sure there is enough coming in to pay your outgoings. This
is why some companies appear to run at a loss, but stay solvent. They
have good cash flow, but poor profitability. A good way of managing
your cash flow is to run your business through a company to take advantage
of tax breaks and the ability to purchase assets before paying yourself
and the taxman. Whilst managing your cash flow, you must make sure
there is money left for the sixth key...

Book Review
As the New Year is approaching, our thoughts naturally turn to resolutions
and what we are going to achieve in the coming year. One thing I am
sure we all want to achieve is to be financially independent.
The book "The Science of Getting Rich" was written in 1910 by
Wallace D. Wattles. It is a classic book that has propelled many
on the path to wealth. If you are serious about getting rich and
achieving what you desire from life, then this is a book you really
must read.
Some points you will learn in the book are:
- The universe is infinitely abundant
- There is no need to be in competition with others - you are
a creator
- Do not covet
- You can create anything that you desire
- Give everyone more "use value" than you take from them in "cash
value"
- Be deeply and profoundly grateful
- Be specific and definite about what you want
- Do not apply your will power to anything outside of yourself
- use it only on yourself
- Do not succumb to doubts and fears
- Be in the present moment at all times
- Be congruent - walk your talk
- Never speak in a discouraged or discouraging way
If you are serious about success then this book is strongly recommended
to you. You can purchase your copy from Amazon.com

Worrying
Did you know that 92% of our worries are wasting our time and energy?
Needlessly, they cause us pain and suffering, when we could easily
be much happier?
This 92% is broken down roughly as follows:
- 40% are about thing that will never happen
- 30% are over things in the past that can't be changed
- 12% are needless health worries
- 10% are petty miscellaneous worries
That leaves 8% that are legitimate worries. These are broken down
into two types - those we can solve, and those that are beyond our
personal ability to solve.
Have you ever thought about how much of your time and energy is
spent on needless worries?
Take a sheet of paper and write down all your worries and concerns.
Look at each one and decide if it is legitimate or one of the 92%
of needless worries. Cross off all the needless worries, and instantly
you feel better!!
Once you have sorted them out, you can start to come up with strategies
to solve the 8% that are left.

Health Tip
Our state of mind directly affects the state of our bodies. Many of
our illnesses are caused by a negative state of mind. Both Louise
Hay and Deepak Chopra teach this, and have their respective approaches.
A colleague of mine spent some time last week explaining to me
how he enjoyed being sick and going to hospital because it gave
him time to rest and relax.
If you are suffering from any ill health at the moment, look at
your state of mind and try to find the cause of your ailment. Is
their a belief or negative thought pattern you are holding on to
that is causing your illness?
I hope you've enjoyed this issue of the Shaping Your Destiny newsletter.
